Spanish for Travellers (South)

Learn to pronounce what you read in a phrase book, and to expand phrases by intelligent use of a small dictionary. Practise your understanding of key responses. In this course, you will be equipped to survive linguistically and culturally in Spanish speaking countries. Text extra: ‘Collins Easy Spanish’.

Course description

This class is designed to equip you for survival in Spanish speaking countries by teaching you how to pronounce words you read in a phrasebook to a standard where you can be understood by a friendly Spaniard. You will also learn to supplement your phrasebook by the intelligent use of a dictionary.
This course will not equip you to have a conversation in Spanish. You may however be so fired up by this beautiful language that you would like to progress! You can then enrol in a Spanish course with us.
No prior experience in the language is necessary.

Course content

  1. Pronunciation
  2. How to use a dictionary
  3. Everyday talk
  4. Public transport, understanding directions and driving
  5. Accommodation
  6. Health and Emergencies
  7. Shopping
  8. Food and Drink

The vocabulary and phrases you meet in topics 3 – 8 will be consolidated by simple, guided role plays. There will be plenty of opportunity for you to practise your listening skills so that you can understand simple answers that you get after you have asked a question in Spanish – eg “How much does it cost?”.
You will also learn by heart some crucial phrases like: “ Could you please repeat that slowly?”
Cultural bits and pieces will be explained, as you meet them in the phrasebook.
As it is an intensive class, you may find it of benefit to make yourself familiar with the book and CD before the class begins. It will also help your Spanish if you use the book and the CD to go over what you learnt in each class.
