Tasmania's Native Orchids
Tasmania has over 200 native bush orchids, a number being rare and/or threatened. Learn about their diversity, how to identify them and where to look for them. The class includes an evening session and a daytime excursion. The evening session will cover the Tasmanian orchid genera and species, their habitats and key sites for orchid hunting. The different flowers will be illustrated and explained, and you will learn how to use identification keys. Look at reference books from the tutor’s own collection.
The excursion will take participants to native orchid sites in a number of locations close to Hobart. This will involve relatively short, slow walks, possibly in hilly terrain, so participants must be of suitable health and fitness, and wear suitable shoes/boots.
Important information:
- The excursion may be postponed by a week if there are insufficient orchids in flower and/or the weather is unsuitable on the scheduled excursion date.
- Participants will use their own transport for the excursion. Adult Education accepts no responsibility for transport arrangements for this class.
- Participants must be of suitable health and fitness for the excursion.
- Children must not accompany adults to this class.
